Society for Environmental Conservation

Bridging Research and Reality for a Sustainable Future

D-41, Shahenshah Garden, Bhopal-462023, Madhya Pradesh
Established: 18 November 1989

The Society for Environmental Conservation (SEC) is a registered non-governmental organization under the Societies Registration Act, 1973 (44), established on 18 November 1989. Headquartered in D-41, Shahenshah Garden Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, SEC is a professional organization comprising committed young professionals and experts from the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, science popularisation, sports, culture, environmental studies, and tribal and rural development. Since its inception, SEC has worked with the core belief that scientific knowledge and technological innovations generated in universities and research laboratories must reach the grassroots to create meaningful, sustainable, and inclusive improvements in peopleโ€™s lives in both rural and urban settings.

Vision and Mission

Vision

SEC envisions a society where environmental protection, economic development, and social well-being coexist in harmony.

Mission

To bridge the gap between research and real-world application by translating science and technology into practical solutions for environmental conservation, water resource management, sustainable livelihoods, and community empowerment.

Core Areas of Work

Environmental Awareness and Conservation

SEC has been actively promoting environmental awareness since 1990 through continuous engagement with communities, students, and civic bodies. Every year on World Environment Day (5 June), the organization conducts awareness programmes focusing on plantation, waste management, and sustainable living practices. These initiatives emphasize household-level waste segregation, composting of biodegradable waste, and collective responsibility toward environmental protection.

Plantation drives have been conducted in Bilkhiriya, Narohna Sankal, Tanda and Bangrasiya villages (Phanda Block, Bhopal District) with active participation from local communities, government school students, NGOs, and local authorities. A notable example is the Plantation and Environmental Conservation Programme held on 19 July 2025 at Mata Mandir Road, Bhopal, organized jointly with the Bhopal Municipal Corporation.

Water Conservation and Resource Management

Recognizing water as a critical global and regional concern, SEC has implemented several impactful projects in water conservation and rejuvenation. A landmark initiative was the DST-funded project (2016โ€“2018) titled "A Change Detection Study of Surface Water Bodies of Jabalpur Town Using Geospatial Technology and Preparation of a Rejuvenation Plan".

Using GIS technology and extensive field surveys, the study assessed 36 lakes in Jabalpur and identified serious issues such as shrinking water spread, pollution, and encroachment. SEC has also executed the large-scale project "Technical and Feasibility Study and Preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for Defunct Lift Irrigation Systems (LIS)" across 45 districts of Madhya Pradesh, in collaboration with the Nandi Foundation, Hyderabad. This initiative provided actionable technical recommendations for reviving irrigation infrastructure and improving agricultural productivity in rural areas.

Sustainable Livelihoods and Agribusiness Development

A major strength of SEC lies in designing and implementing science-based, bio-integrated livelihood models for rural, tribal, and economically weaker communities, with strong support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and NABARD. These projects integrate aquaculture, agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, and natural resource-based enterprises, ensuring low-cost, eco-friendly, climate-resilient, and market-oriented livelihood opportunities.

Key Initiatives

  • Integrated Aquaculture Enhancement using Periphyton in Raisen District, benefiting weaker sections through SHG-based agribusiness models
  • Integration of aquaculture with horticulture and animal husbandry in tribal areas of Betul District, graded "Excellent" by DST
  • Spirulina-based aquaculture livelihoods for tribal communities in Betul District
  • Sisal-based livelihood and agribusiness development for Baiga Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs) in Mandla District, focusing on natural fiber value addition, entrepreneurship, and market linkages
  • NABARD-supported ongoing projects on aquaponics and innovative pen culture practices, empowering rural communities and women SHGs in Bhopal District

Education, Sports, Culture, and Community Development

SEC follows a holistic development approach, recognizing that environmental stewardship is closely linked with education, culture, health, and social cohesion. Since 2015, the organization has regularly organized cultural programmes in rural schools to connect traditional heritage with environmental values. Sports programmes, initiated in 2019, promote physical well-being as an integral component of sustainable community life.

SEC is also actively involved in science and mathematics popularization, organizing events such as National Mathematics Day celebrations in rural schools. These programmes promote concept-based learning, scientific temper, logical thinking, and hands-on education using locally available and eco-friendly materials, helping reduce academic anxiety and improve learning outcomes among rural students.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

With more than three decades of experience, the Society for Environmental Conservation has built a strong track record of successfully completed, ongoing, and nationally recognized projects. By combining scientific rigor, community participation, and institutional collaboration, SEC continues to work toward environmental conservation, water security, sustainable livelihoods, women's empowerment, education, sports, culture, tribal and inclusive rural development.

SEC remains committed to developing replicable, community-driven models that address environmental challenges while improving quality of life, ensuring that conservation and development move forward hand in hand.
